ConnectX Ethernet or InfiniBand?

Ethernet fits familiar data-center operations

ConnectX Ethernet adapters support conventional IP networking and can add RDMA over Converged Ethernet for latency- and bandwidth-sensitive traffic. This can make Ethernet attractive when the organization already operates an Ethernet fabric and wants accelerated storage or compute traffic on a familiar foundation.

RoCE performance depends on the complete network design, including switching, congestion behavior, priorities, cabling, and host configuration.

InfiniBand is purpose-built for clustered compute

NVIDIA Quantum InfiniBand combines host adapters, switches, fabric management, and in-network computing features around HPC and large-scale AI communication patterns.

It is a natural fit when low-latency collectives, MPI workloads, or a dedicated compute fabric are primary requirements and the organization can operate the corresponding stack.

The adapter is only one decision

Link rate alone does not define application performance. Specify the whole path.

• Protocol and target link speed
• Port count and PCIe host interface
• Switch platform and oversubscription
• Cable or optical module type
• RDMA and GPUDirect requirements
• Fabric management and monitoring
• Storage and east-west traffic patterns

Use the existing environment as evidence

If a team already has strong Ethernet operations and the workload fits a properly engineered RoCE fabric, Ethernet may reduce operational friction. If the cluster is a dedicated HPC or AI environment built around collective communication, InfiniBand may provide the more direct architecture.

For either choice, validate the exact ConnectX SKU, firmware, drivers, switch features, optics, and topology together.
